Back Bay Post Office on list of expected closings in 2011
Jan 2011 24

It appears that the Back Bay US Post Office is at risk of closing, according to a list of endangered postal facilities on the Wall Street Journal website.

It, and ten other Massachusetts’ branches were on a list of 491 sites submitted by the US Postal Service in 2009. Closings were scheduled to begin at the end of 2010.

The Back Bay Annex only recently re-opened at 390 Clarendon Street after being relocated to 31 St James Street while The Clarendon | Back Bay condo and apartment project was constructed. The idea that the new station would be mothballed is startling.

The original 491 closings have now been expanded to include as many as 2,000 branches, country-wide, while another 16,000 facilities will be examined and potentially closed.

The US Postal Service ran a $8.5 billion deficit, last year. Accounting for future retiree pension costs is only one of many reasons for its financial situation.
